The DRG Challenge is a series of technical problems designed to provide attendees a fun opportunity to compete for prizes using their creative technical problem solving abilities. This event is the inaugural kick-off for a series of in-person and online challenges the DRG is sponsoring beginning in 2012.
The challenge is open to all registered attendees of the FIRST 2012 Conference in Malta. Note, with the exception of DRG volunteers, DRG Advisory Council members, Team Cymru employees, Team Cymru contractors and immediate family members of the aforementioned people or groups, all attendees are eligible for prizes.
Each member of the winning team will receive a new 64 GB Wi-Fi iPad!
Eligible players are encouraged to register as a team of up to four players. Individuals or those teams with fewer than four players should contact a DRG volunteer for assistance in forming a four-person team and we will try to match you up with other players.
Team registration can be done in person at the DRG staffed Geek Lounge area or by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the Subject line containing FIRST2012 challenge team registration and a list of up to 4 team members, including an email address for each member.
We encourage you to PGP encrypt any email to the Dragon Research Group (DRG) using the DRG public key 0x47196BBF. Please note however, our communications to you during the challenge, particularly automated emails and challenges mailing list posts are delivered in clear text. Please plan accordingly. However, we will be happy to use, verify and sign you or your team's public PGP key as you may wish to do with our's. Please see the biglumber FIRST 2012 PGP key signing event page to upload your public key and for further details.
Participant names will be validated with the FIRST 2012 registration list. Team members will each receive a message containing the information needed to begin the challenge. If PGP keys for your team members are on the FIRST 2012 PGP key ring, we will endeavor to PGP encrypt and sign emails to you and your team. Note, we cannot guarantee PGP encryption and signing of all challenge related emails, but we will attempt to do so when we can.
Once registered, all participants will be automatically subscribed to the email@example.com mailing list. This mailing list is moderated and is specifically intended for DRG challenges. DRG volunteers may periodically send out announcements or respond to appropriate public discussion about the challenges. You are free to post to the list, but please note that some messages may be deemed inappropriate for public discussion while a challenge is in progress and may be moderated or taken offline at the discretion of DRG volunteers. Participants may choose not to be subscribed to the mailing list or may leave the mailing list at any time, but we highly recommend all team members subscribe and monitor the mailing list for the duration of the challenge. Furthermore, we urge team members to ensure their are able to receive email from the list and may wish to periodically view the web archives of the list to ensure they are receiving all the latest challenge updates and information. After the challenge has ended, those who were not already subscribed before the challenge started will be removed.
The challenge will take place over four days, Monday, June 18 to Thursday, June 21 inclusive. It will consist of one or more individual "milestones" per day. Each day a new milestone set will be added to the challenge. Milestones will not be announced nor enabled before their scheduled day. This is help ensure participants are able to enjoy the rest of the conference during the week.
Upon completion of a milestone you will receive instructions on how to proceed. Normally this will be in the form of a unique URL. The team ID and passphrase are used to access successive milestone URLs. All URLs will only be accessible using HTTPS. Do NOT share milestone URLs with anyone not part of your team. DRG will monitor access to these URLs to calculate scores. Participant and team progress will be monitored, posted and updated each day so you can see how you are faring. In addition, current standings will be announced each morning in the general session.
The first team to complete a milestone is awarded 3000 points. The second team to complete a milestone will be awarded 2000 points. All other teams will be awarded 1000 points for completing a milestone. The final milestone contains a secret passphrase. The first team to send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org will be awarded 5000 points. At the conclusion of the challenge, the team with the most total points will be deemed the winner. Ties will be broken by calculating the best overall average time to complete each milestone. If by some miraculous coincidence a tie persists, the winner will be choosen from the tying teams at random.
Have fun and good luck!
